Hiking Tips: Themed Footpaths in the Tux Valley

Tux River Adventure Footpath

This footpath along the edge of the Tux River between Vorderlanersbach and Hintertux is guaranteed to provide an exciting combination of fun, sport and nature on approx. 8 km. The various exciting stages of this walk will stimulate children's imagination and, at the same time, demand sporting ability and skill. Attractions such as a bumpy slide, play pond, Tarzan aerial ropeway, adventure stable and much more are here, just waiting to be tried out by the kids.

Route: Start in Vorderlanersbach - footpath no. 10; duration: approx. 2,5 hours, category: easy walk
Tip: suitable for pushchairs!

Kühe

Alpine Footpath Tux

Most farms in the region are involved in dairy farming, with approx. 1000 head of speckled and brown cattle. The alpine pastures are only cultivated during the summer months, ending in autumn with the “Almabtrieb”, which is a festival celebrating the safe coming-home of the cattle from the higher pastures. This involves the cows being ornately decorated before being herded down into the valley. Wonderful alpine pastures and landscapes can be enjoyed along this walk - a must for all those fascinated by the cosy appeal of alpine huts.

Route: Start in Vorderlanersbach - mountain road to the Geiselalm und Hobalm - footpath no. 47 - Vallruckalm - Nasse Tuxalm. duration: approx. 6 hours; category: easy round walk

Life at the Foot of the Glacier

Fauna and Flora in Hintertux at 1,500 m above sea level are continually subjected to the influence of the glacier. Hard conditions have meant that over the centuries a special breed of survivor, be it the plant, animal or human variety, has evolved. During a walk along these themed footpaths, information boards can be found describing the various elements which dictate life in this unforgiving landscape.

Route: Footpath no. 11 - centre of Hintertux - Neuhintertux, bottom station of the Glacier Lifts. This footpath is suitable for use with a heavy duty pushchair. duration: approx. 1/2 hour, category: easy walk

Natur

'Naturwelt' Path

The "Naturwelt" Path can be found at 1.800 m above sea level, leading you through alpine pastures and bog land from Penken to the Schrofenalm. Swampy moor lands, such as the Niedermoore rank in Austria as an endangered habitat. The Niedermoor is particularly affected by the terrain conditions and mineral soil. 23 endangered species and 6 protected species have been detected along this educational path.

Route: Use the lift 'Finkenberger Almbahn' to the middle station - education path no. 22b and no. 57 - Schrofenalm. Choice of either descending at Vorderlanersbach - footpath nr. 55 or walk up to the Wanglalm - footpath no. 55 and 57 - Penkenjoch - descent using the Finkenberg Lifts. Duration: approx, 2,5 hours, category: easy walk

Natur

Waterfall Trail Hintertux

Visitors will be captivated by the Schraubenfall and Kesselfall Waterfalls, with their naturally formed granite bridges, caves and ravines. The Waterfall Trail with its breathtaking scenery leads past a naturally split stone block, which reminds one of a whale’s mouth, and is fittingly known as the 'Whale Fish Mouth'.

Route: Start at the bottom of the Hintertuxer Glacier Lifts – footpath no. 526 past the Kessel Waterfall - gravel road – footpath no. 526 in the direction of the Spannagelhaus - footpath no. 16, signpost Sommerberg - Tuxbach-Klamm - Talkessel Waldeben. Descent: footpath no. 16 to Hintertux, or climb to the Sommerbergalm – descent with the Hintertuxer Glacier Lifts. Duration: approx. 2 hours, character: easy walk

Educational Nature Trail 'Schluchtwelt'

In the middle of Finkenberg you will discover the Glocke , which is a protected area covering 33 hectares, along the Educational Nature Trail. A natural oasis with fauna and flora in abundance. The plant life is particularly impressive along the edge of the Tuxer Gorge – a ravine which reaches depths of up to 70m in the areas of the Devils’s and Cemetery Bridges. Display boards along the route provide information on forest habitats, the geological development and a history of how humans have used the forest to their benefit.

Route: Start in Finkenberg - Cemetery Bridge - Glocke - round walk; footpath no. 32, 32a and 32b; duration: approx. 1 hour; character: easy circular walk

Climbing

Adventure, Sports & Action

Climbing and mountaineering are among the oldest sports in the Zillertal. Early on, the Zillertal and Tux Valley have made a name as a mountaineering destination.

The via ferratas in the Zillertal are ideal for those who want to experience a special adventure. The routes lead through partly steep and spectacular walls - with fixed steel cables, brackets, ladders and step aids you climb the rock up and up ... The difficulty levels of the via ferratas range from A (easy) to D / E (very difficult). The simple routes can normally be mastered by families with children, too. Fundamental requirments for every via ferrata are mountaineering experience, surefootedness and a head for heights. The trend sport rewards with a particular "mountain feeling" and fantastic panoramic views!
